Four Pillars of Technology Implementation in Recovery Support Organizations

In my role as the co-chair of the National Steering Committee of the Center for Addiction Recovery Support (CARS), I get to interact with a lot of thoughtful people.  Recently, I had a powerful conversation with a group of recovery leaders about implementing technology in the rapidly evolving world of recovery support services. I was struck by something that Dave Sheridan, the Executive Director of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, said: “technology can be a powerful tool - but only if implemented thoughtfully”. As a recovery housing expert, Dave stated that successful technology integration requires four critical components:

  1. hardware

  2. software

  3. user support, and

  4. tech support.

Too often, organizations make the mistake of simply purchasing devices or software without considering the human element. The real magic happens when technology is paired with comprehensive training and ongoing support. This is especially true in recovery settings, where staff and residents may have varying levels of digital literacy.

One surprising solution? Leverage the tech-savvy skills of younger stakeholders. They can become valuable allies in training staff and creating a more tech-friendly environment. This approach not only solves immediate technical challenges but also builds community and provides leadership opportunities for residents.

As recovery organizations look to the future, remember: technology is more than just gadgets. It's about creating supportive, accessible systems that empower individuals in their recovery journey.

The bottom line: Invest in all four pillars- hardware, software, user support, and tech support - and watch your organization transform.
